11/11/2023 0 Comments Middle colonies preziThe government of the Southern Colonies was democratic and had an elected assembly to agree on political decisions. The slaves lived by a slave code which stated that slaves could not gather in groups, own weapons, learn to read or write, and travel without a pass. Slavery was a huge part of the culture because plantations required lots of work. Success in agriculture led to an increase in demand for laborers in the Southern Colonies. South Carolina had large plantations and many slaves since it had very fertile soil, whereas North Carolina had small farms since it was so mountainous. Some cash crops include tobacco, rice, and indigo. This region's economy relied on cash crops since it had a warm climate, fertile soil, and long growing seasons. The colonists were friendly with the natives, but when they wanted the Indians' land, conflicts arose and the peace was broken. Middle Colonies Religion/Government Geography/ Economy The Southern Colonies Labor Force Relationships w/ Native Americans Geography /Economy Labor Force The Southern Colonies consist of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Major industries include merchants' trade, shipbuilding, and fishing. The economy was was mostly based on trade and farming. The colonist didn't know how to farm until natives taught them how to fertilize plants. The soil of the Northern Colonies is very rocky and the climate was harsh. The Northern Colonies are located on the northern part of the colonies. That is actually how some states were founded. Dissenters who disagreed with laws would be punished or forced out of colony. They established a general court which later became acts of self government. To be apart of the court, you must be Christian. It included Jews, Catholics, Puritans, and the Quakers. The religious tolerance attracted many people. They worked as homemakers, land owners and some owned small businesses. Women were also highly respected workers. At this time, there were not as many slaves around to do work. English Colonies: Labor Force Relationships w/ Native Americans The End Labor in New England was mostly done by families. They even exchanged fur and other goods with them. They had a trading post with the Iroquios Indians. Colonists in the Northern Colonies They had a great relationship with the Native Americans. In fact, South Carolina's economy was similar to Georgia's. South Carolina had large plantations, but North Carolina was very mountainous leading it to have small farms. The weather warm and it caused for long growing seasons. Religion/Government Religion/ Government The Southern Colonies' geography was mostly fertile so cash crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo were a huge part of the economy. New York and Philadelphia became important centers of trade. Staple crops included barley, oat, and wheat. Since they had great soil that meant they were able to grow staple crops. The Middle Colonies had great climate,and they also had great soil. During this time, colonists became angry and began attacking friendly Indians. Eventually, conflicts arose and lasted for twenty years, leading to Bacon's Rebellion in 1676. John Rolfe, a colonist who discovered the cultivation of tobacco, married Pocahontas to form peace.
